FAQ

Massage is appropriate for most dogs.  Even a perfectly healthy dog can gain from the basic principles of massage such as relaxation, reduction of stress and anxiety, lymph and circulation system stimulation and pain relief.

Good circulation ensures your animal is getting a healthy supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients to their brain and other organs and keeps their skin and coat healthy.   Improving the lymph fluid helps carry metabolic waste away from muscles and internal organs.

Even dogs that are physically active can benefit from massage.   A day of running or playing can make an animal stiff and sore in joints and muscles.  Massage can help relax those muscles and releases tension.  All this means is your dog will have a better chance of avoiding certain health conditions like hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body).

Massage for Animals with some health conditions or injuries may not be appropriate.  Always check with your vet if you’re unsure..

Massage therapy doesn’t cure illness or injury, but can aid the body in the healing and recovery process expediting the time in recovery.   It can also increase range of motion in both animals in recovery and healthy animals.

Each session will be based on the need of the animal at the time of the session and any recommendations from your vet. You will be asked a variety of questions to understand the current health situation. The animal will be checked out through touch, smell and observing their movement. The acupressure meridians will also be evaluated. The session will be based on the findings from this.

A session could include regular massage therapy focusing on the muscles exhibiting tension or soreness. Acupressure may be done to help based on chi deficiencies or excesses. Manual Ligament Therapy or Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be applied if required.
Research has shown that ligaments feed the brain with more proprioceptive information about joints than muscles and tendons.  These ligaments can be a significant source of pain, especially in cases of chronic pain.  Until injured ligaments can heal from their underlying dysfunction, muscles will remain in a tense of guarded state.

MLT stimulates cells in the ligaments which manipulates their sensory output to the muscles, tendons and fascia.  The end result is a dramatic reduction in tension.  MLT is so gentle it can be used even in the most acute cases.  There is no pain associated with the technique.
In the simplest terms, the lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and organs that work as part of the immune system to carry lymph fluid that is rich in infection-fighting white blood cells throughout the body, while also helping rid the body of waste and excess fluid.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage relieves swelling that happens when medical treatment or illness blocks your lymphatic system. It involves gently manipulating specific area of the body to help lymph move to an area with working lymph.  Lymph can only move in one direction – upward toward the neck where it reenters the circulatory system via the subclavian veins. Unlike blood in the circulatory system, which relies on the heart pumping, lymph fluid depends on muscle contractions in the surrounding skeletal muscles to move through the lymphatic vessels.  MLT stimulates this system.

Massage is right for most dogs. If you aren’t sure, talk to your vet or give us a call.

Yes!  Definitely. Give us a call to discuss it more!

Many animals are nervous at first or may not want to lay down and relax. Some animals do better with their human nearby and others do better with their humans out of sight.  Sessions can be tailored to what fits your animals needs. And just because an animal doesn’t relax, doesn’t mean they aren’t getting the benefits of massage.

Most sensitive areas can be avoided. And some of those sensitivities are reflective of soreness and can be addressed.

Some vets suggest a waiting period from a few days to a couple of weeks after surgery. However, the sooner they can get in, the better. An animal that has just been under anesthesia will benefit from Manual Lymphatic Drainage right after surgery. Also all the muscles of the body can benefit from the relaxation of massage therapy.  We are trained to avoid the incision area and how to handle an animal post-surgery.

Animals of all ages can benefit from massage therapy.

Most Acupressure takes 24-48 hours for the body to show a response. Usually 2-3 sessions of massage is needed to start seeing results however some animals start to respond immediately. It is important to realize that pain from illness or injury happens over time and treating that pain doesn’t happen immediately. Once the animal seems to be back to “normal” it is beneficial to continue regular massage sessions to keep health and vitality

You may notice subtle changes at first. The animal may urinate more, drink more and may be a little lethargic. As sessions continue, changes will be more noticeable with an improved gait, more active, better body language..
